Pacific Repertory Theatre

Carmel, CA

MISSION STATEMENT: In celebrating the transforming power of the creative spirit, PacRep Theatre produces bold and daring interpretations of the great plays from the world stage - plays that engage, excite, educate and inspire - presenting a world-class theatrical experience.

In 1905, the "bohemians” arrived in Carmel. Almost immediately, the Carmel Club of Arts & Crafts opened the town's first theatre and cultural center, the Carmel Arts & Crafts Clubhouse, on the present site of the Circle Theatre of the Golden Bough Playhouse.

In 2005, “the next 100 years” of Carmel Theatre history began with exciting plans for the Carmel cultural community. As of 2012, The Golden Bough has seen its first phase renovation completed, and plans continue to be made for a restoration of the aging Forest Theater. Those early bohmeians would be proud!

Golden Bough Theatre (297-seats) Housed within the Golden Bough Playhouse on Monte Verde Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues, in Carmel-by-the-Sea. In 1993, PacRep saved the historic site from development. In 2011, the non-profit company completed the first phase of an exciting new renovation, including the addition of a computerized revolving stage, and exciting new special effects systems. The Circle Theatre (120 seats) Housed within the Golden Bough Playhouse below the main Golden Bough Theatre, with its own entrance on Casanova Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues, in Carmel-by-the-Sea. A unique theatre-in-the-round, the Circle Theatre makes an ideal setting for experimental plays, original material, and other works enhanced by an intimate setting.

Built in 1910, the historic Outdoor Forest Theater is a 540-seat ampitheatre located on Mountain View Avenue and Santa Rita Street, in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The stage is framed by towering pines, and huge open fireplaces, providing a majestic backdrop for the plays and musicals presented by Pacific Repertory Theatre. Every August and September, PacRep presents an annual family musical, followed by the annual Carmel Shakespeare Festival.
